Bhel pares loss on winning order

Bharat Heavy Electricals was trading down 1.62% at Rs 2276 at 12:14 IST on the BSE, trimming early loss after company secured a contract worth Rs 1016 crore to build a 1,200 megawatts hydro power plant in Bhutan.

The announcement was made during trading hours today, 8 February 2010. The stock had fallen as much as 1.81%, at the day's low of Rs 2271.40 on the BSE in early trade.

Meanwhile, the BSE Sensex was down 216.18 points, or 1.42%, to 15690.05.

On BSE, 20462 shares were traded in the counter as against an average daily volume of 1.13 lakh shares in the past one quarter.

The stock hit a high of Rs 2306 and a low of Rs 2271.40 so far during the day. The stock had hit a 52-week high of Rs 2550 on 17 October 2009 and a 52-week low of Rs 1251 on 6 March 2009.

The stock had outperformed the market over the past one month till 6 February 2010, sliding 4.48% compared with the Sensex's 10.09% fall. It had also out performed the market in past one quarter, rising 4.13% as against 1.50% decline in the Sensex.

India's largest power equipment maker by sales has an equity capital of Rs 489.52 crore. Face value per share is Rs 10.

The current price of Rs 2276 discounts the company's Q3 December 2009 annualised EPS of Rs 87.64, by a PE multiple of 25.96.

Bharat Heavy Electricals (Bhel)'s net profit rose 35.7% to Rs 1072.59 crore on a 17.9% increase in sales to Rs 7100.34 crore in Q3 December 2009 over Q3 December 2008. Net profit got a boost because of strong demand from private and state-run companies for power equipment. Bhel announced the results during trading hours on Thursday, 21 January 2010. The numbers, however, missed market expectations. The company reported the slowest sales growth in the fiscal year that started 1 April 2009.

Bhel is engaged in manufacturing and distributing electrical, electronic, mechanical and nuclear power equipment.

The Government of India owns 67.72% stake in Bhel (as on 31 December 2009).
