  • Sensex, Nifty hit fresh intraday high

    Key benchmarks scaled fresh intraday highs in mid afternoon trade. The Nifty continued its uptrend towards 11,100-mark. The index was still below its 200-day simple moving average placed at 11,174.88.

    At 14:28 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, was up 462.49 points or 1.25% at 37,420.65. The Nifty 50 index was up 137.75 points or 1.26% at 11,063.05.

    Among secondary barometers, the BSE Mid-Cap index was up 0.88%. The BSE Small-Cap index was up 0.35%.

    The market breadth remained positive. On BSE, 1251 shares rose and 1072 shares fell. A total of 135 shares were unchanged.

    The Wholesale Price Index (WPI)-based inflation, base year 2011-12, dipped to a 25-month low of 1.1% in July 2019 from 2.0% in June 2019.

    Tata Steel (up 6.23%), Vedanta (up 5.4%), Yes Bank (4.62%) and Tech Mahindra (up 3.4%) were top gainers on BSE Sensex.

    Sun Pharmaceuticals Industries (down 4.75%), Kotak Mahindra Bank (down 1.3%) and Tata Motors (down 1.02%0 were top losers on Sensex.

    Apollo Hospital Enterprise gained 4.7% to Rs 1384.15 after the company announced its Q1 June 2019 result after trading hours yesterday, 13 August 2019. The stock hit a 52-week high of Rs 1444 today, 14 August 2019. The company's net profit rose 68.5% to Rs 57.20 crore on a 16.4% rise in the net sales to Rs 2571.89 crore in Q1 June 2019 over Q1 June 2018.

    Edelweiss Financial Services was up 0.42% to Rs 143. The company announced it quarterly earnings during market hours, today. The company's consolidated net profit dropped 50% to Rs 132.02 crore on 2.8% rise in total income to Rs 2545.93 crore in Q1 June 2019 over Q1 June 2018. In a separate announcement, the financial services conglomerates announced that US-based Kora Management will be investing up to approximately Rs 875 crores in the Edelweiss Group. Kora Management has committed to invest approximately Rs 525 crore in its advisory business, Edelweiss Global Investment Advisors (EGIA) subject to structuring-related milestones.

    The yield on 10-year benchmark federal paper rose to 6.611% at 14:10 IST compared with 6.518% at close in the previous trading session.

    In the foreign exchange market, the rupee edged higher against the dollar. The partially convertible rupee was hovering at 71.2725, compared with its close of 71.4000 during the previous trading session.

    In the commodities market, Brent crude for October 2019 settlement was down 66 cents at $60.64 a barrel. The contract rose $2.73 or 4.66% to settle at $61.30 a barrel during the previous trading session.

    MCX Gold futures for 4 October 2019 settlement rose 0.28% at Rs 37,879.

    Overseas, European stocks were trading lower amid weak German GDP data. Germany's GDP, or gross domestic product, fell by 0.1% between April and June, raising fears of a recession for Europe's largest economy.

    Asian shares are trading higher across the board on Wednesday, as the US announced a delay in the implementation of tariffs on some Chinese goods.

    The People's Bank of China set its official midpoint reference rate for the yuan at 7.0312 per dollar on Wednesday.

    China's industrial output rose 4.8% in July as compared to a year earlier, official data showed. Retail sales growth rose 7.6% in July from a year earlier.

    US stocks soared on Tuesday after the US decided to delay tariffs on certain Chinese goods while outright removing some items from the tariff list
