Agri Buzz: Summer crop acreage up around 15% on year, harvesting of rabi crops to be completed by April

Reserve Bank of India noted in a latest monthly update that as on April 11, 2025, 92.4 per cent of summer sowing was completed and the acreage was 14.7 per cent higher than the levels recorded a year ago. Area under all the major crops recorded higher acreage compared to the previous year. The above normal temperature (maximum as well as minimum) and above normal number of heatwave days are estimated over most parts of the country during the summer months (April to June), raising concerns on summer crops. Nonetheless, the western disturbance induced rains in the selected regions could keep the temperature rise under control. Additionally, harvesting of majority of rabi crops (viz, wheat, rapeseed, mustard and chana) is expected to be completed by April, making heatwaves less of a concern for them.
