In December 2022, the seasonally adjusted volume of retail trade decreased by 2.7% in the euro area and by 2.6% in the EU, compared with November 2022, according to estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In November 2022, the retail trade volume increased by 1.2% in both the euro area and the EU. In December 2022 compared with December 2021, the calendar adjusted retail sales index decreased by 2.8% in the euro area and by 2.5% in the EU.
The annual average level of retail trade for the year 2022, compared with 2021, increased by 0.7% in the euro area and by 1.1% in the EU. In the euro area in December 2022, compared with November 2022, the volume of retail trade decreased by 2.9% for food, drinks and tobacco and by 2.6% for non-food products, while it grew by 2.3% for automotive fuels. In the euro area in December 2022, compared with December 2021, the volume of retail trade decreased by 6.9% for food, drinks and tobacco and by 0.6% for non-food products, while it grew by 6.0% for automotive fuels.
