Agri Buzz: Cotton acreage drops 3.42% as choppy prices weigh on sentiments

Cotton sowing trends are reflecting a challenging scenario for the local production. Latest data from the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare showed that area under cultivation of cotton stood at 98.55 lakh hectares as on July 18, 2025, down from 102.05 lakh hectares in 2024 and marking a drop of 3.49 lakh hectares or 3.42%. Details reveal that farmers in some parts of Maharashtra and Telangana have shifted acreage towards other crops on delayed monsoon onset and a choppy trend witnessed in the cotton prices. This decline has emerged even as the total Kharif acreage stood at 708.31 lakh hectares, an increase of 4.10% over the same period last year. Wholesale price index of Cotton Yarn is moving in a tight range of around 131-132 over last one and half years, triggering a nervous response from the growers.
