Commodities Buzz: US Crude oil imports down 7.5% on year in last four weeks says EIA


The US Energy Information Administration or EIA has stated that US crude oil refinery inputs averaged 16.2 million barrels per day during the week ending September 26, 2025, which was 308 thousand barrels per day less than the previous week’s average. Refineries operated at 91.4% of their operable capacity last week. Gasoline production decreased last week, averaging 9.3 million barrels per day. Distillate fuel production decreased by 25 thousand barrels per day last week, still averaging 5 million barrels per day.

The US crude oil imports averaged 5.8 million barrels per day last week, decreased by 662 thousand barrels per day from the previous week. Over the past four weeks, crude oil imports averaged about 6.1 million barrels per day, 7.5% less than the same four-week period last year. Total motor gasoline imports (including both finished gasoline and gasoline blending components) last week averaged 668 thousand barrels per day, and distillate fuel imports averaged 118 thousand barrels per day.

EIA noted that US commercial crude oil inventories (excluding those in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve) increased by 1.8 million barrels from the previous week. At 416.5 million barrels, US crude oil inventories are about 4% below the five-year average for this time of year. Total motor gasoline inventories increased by 4.1 million barrels from last week and is the same as the five-year average for this time of year. Both finished gasoline inventories and blending components inventories increased last week.
