Australia's retail sales grew by 0.3% in January 2025, recovering from a 0.1% drop in December and meeting market forecasts. The rise was driven by stronger food-related spending, with cafes, restaurants, and takeaway services up 1.1%, and food retailing up 0.7%. Non-food sectors also improved, led by other retailing at 2.4% and clothing at 2.0%. However, household goods retailing dropped sharply by 4.4%. Regionally, gains were seen in Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, and Tasmania, while New South Wales saw a 0.3% decline.
