Economic Buzz: BoJ sticks to 0.5% rate, unveils cautious bond taper

In its June meeting, the Bank of Japan decided unanimously to leave its key short-term interest rate unchanged at 0.5 percent, holding at its highest level since 2008. The move highlights the central bank’s careful stance as it keeps an eye on global trade tensions and U.S. tariff policies that could cloud the global outlook. Alongside this steady rate, the BoJ outlined a measured plan to unwind its massive monetary stimulus. It will trim Japanese government bond purchases by 400 billion yen every quarter through March 2026 and further reduce by 200 billion yen per quarter starting April 2026. This step-by-step approach aims to bring monthly bond buying down to about 2 trillion yen by the first quarter of 2027, marking a slow but steady path back to normal policy without jolting financial markets.
