The company was founded in 1897 and is based in Mumbai, India with representative offices in Sharjah, the United Arab Emirates; Nairobi, Kenya; Colombo, Sri Lanka; Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and Guangzhou, China. The company was formally incorporated in the year 1932.

During the year 2004-2005, the company introduced 155 lts DC Refrigerator with stepped chiller try and also it introduced Electronic controller in Frost Free refrigerator in Frost Free refrigerators 260 FF & 410 FF. During the year, the company developed new model of vending machines. The company developed complex Low-pressure Die casting dies for Alloy Wheels and in the same year, it introduced series of Compressors for CBP application (Commercial Back Pressure). During the year the company developed of a new range of Locks.

During the year 2005-2006, the company introduced new range of chairs, desks and wooden bedroom set and also it introduced multiplex chair with sliding seat, and training room chair. During the year, the company developed of compact design of modular trimming, piercing tools and vacuum forming moulds for refrigerator liners and plastic door panels. The company also developed of blast resistance and bullet resistance doors.

During the year 2006-2007, the company developed of sofa cum bed with innovative folding mechanism. The company launched of a new Frost-Free platform for EON refrigerators met with a runaway success. During the same year, the company developed 2 Canister and 4 Canister Vending Machines. The company developed of modular sofa range, wooden home furniture and Lite Modular furniture and in the same year, the company developed of workstation chair for ergonomically better comfort.

During the year 2007-2008, Lawkim amalgamated with the company, Lawkim engaged in the business of manufacturing and marketing specialized electronic motors. During the year, the company developed a new range of automatic washing machine for India conditions of erratic power and non-availability of water. The company developed a unique dual access control padlock and in the same year, the company also developed largest gravity die-casting (weighting 40 kg.).

During the year 2008-2009, the company set up wholly owned subsidiaries namely Godrej ConsumerBiz Limited (GCBL) with effect from March 25, 2009 and also set up subsidiaries namely, Godrej Hygiene Care Limited (GHCL).

During the year, the company introduced of Eon range of 250L & 280L FF refrigerators. The company developed 5- star energy rating pentacool refrigerator and in the same year, it also developed of low-cost diesel forklifts trucks. During the year, the company forayed into the premium colour television sets segment, and lunched of Eon range of XLCDs with iPIX technology.
